Putting From The Fringe - Tips for Sinking Far Putts

Golf is full of tough decisions. Which club do I use, should I lay up, should I get another beer? We get, there’s a lot to decide when playing 18-holes. One of the toughest choices a golfer must make is whether to putt or chip from the fringe. It’s not the easiest decision to make, but don’t worry, we’ll give you some tips on what you can do.

Should I Putt or Should I Chip?

There is an old adage in golf “Your worst putt usually beats your best chip.” There is a reason why this saying is true. Typically, when chipping from the fringe you increase the possibility of a miss-swing or hitting a badly placed shot. That’s why it’s best to use your putter in that scenario.

Patience, Patience, Patience

Before you swing or even line up your shot, you have to take a look at your surroundings. Basically, you want to make sure there are no obstacles in the way of the putt. Objects like sprinkler heads, rough patches, divots, and sand will re-route your ball. That’s why it’s always a good idea to look at the line to make sure nothing is in the way.

Is The Grass Greener?

Depending on how the grass is growing can determine what approach you should take. In situations where the grass is growing toward you, putting may cause the ball to skip or slow in speed. Chipping in tall grain grass would be the safer option in that case. Otherwise, if the grass is growing away from you, then use the putter. Your shot will typically roll nice and true.

Should I Putt Differently?

In the fringe, you should stand and putt the ball normally. You’ll want to make sure your hands are slightly ahead of the ball. Otherwise, if your hands are behind the ball, then you’ll create a loft when putting. This causes the ball to go airborne, lose speed, and bounce. If the grass is a bit tall, take some practice swings before putting to adjust your stroke accordingly.

With practice, you’ll get better at putting from the fringe. It might even be the difference between shooting under 90.
