PGA Championship Winner 2020 – Collin Morikawa

Sunday’s PGA tournament provided golf fans with excitement as the first-time winner; Collin Morikawa hoisted the trophy. Only the third-youngest golfer to win the PGA championship (Jack Nickalus, Rory McIlory), Collin Morikawa has caught the attention of the golf world. Shooting 65 and 66 during the weekend rounds, Collin also tied the record for the lowest score set by a PGA Championship Winner. His ascension in golf now has him ranked 5th in the world and 2nd in the FedEx Cup standings.

Who is Collin Morikawa?

Collin Morikawa is one of golf’s youngest pros. He began his career with 22 made cuts on the PGA Tour. Golf pros like Tiger Woods for example had a streak of 25 made cuts in their PGA tour debut. He’s one of the few golfers to win the PGA Championship in his debut. As a native Californian, Collin played golf in college while attending The University of California-Berkley. Early in his PGA Tour career, he won the 2019 Barracuda Tournament. Not too bad considering he turned pro in 2019.

How’d The Field Play

There was plenty of competition during the PGA Championship this past weekend. Brooks Koepka was eying a third PGA Championship and had a lead going into Sunday. However, his putter went cold and he couldn’t hold on to win. Dustin Johnson was in the mix and had a short lead on Sunday. Despite having good overall scores for the weekend, Dustin couldn’t pass Collin Morikawa.

Sealing Victory

What helped Collin Morikawa pull away from the pack on Sunday were some incredible shots on the back 9. On the 14th hole, he chipped a ball that just landed on the front part of the cup for birdie. The final nail in the coffin was when 2 holes later, Collin hit a drive that landed right on the green. His next putt went in and that was the decisive blow to the competition.

Did Someone Say Playoffs?

That’s right, the FedEx Cup playoffs start soon (in less than 2 weeks). Many of the top golfers on the leaderboard qualify like Brooks Koepka. And the US Open is about a month away. For golf fans, every match is a must-see event. We’ll see who wins the FedEx cup this year. Either way, it’ll be an exciting finish.
